The City Special Branch was formed at the time of the formation of Calicut City Police
District on 01-06-1979. Before that one Inspector was holding charge of the erstwhile
Kozhikode District Special Branch. There were 3 Sub Inspectors to assist the Inspector,
one each at Calicut City, Badagara and Kalpetta.
From 04-04-1983 charge of Special Branch was performed by a Deputy Superintendent of
Police up to 13-08-1987. The officer in charge of the Special Branch was re-designated
as Assistant Commissioner of Police. The City Special Branch is accommodated at
the northern side of City Police Office building (Ground floor).
The District Crime Record Bureau of the Kozhikode City started functioning based of the
recommendations of the National Police Commission. DCRB came to existence vide order
No.A1-41939/89 CC date 08-11-1989 in view of GO (MS) 69/89 Home dated08-11-1989 and
proceeding No. Sa 18610/86 dated 01-09-1989 of Director General of Police, Kerala.
The District Crime Record Bureau is headed by an Assistant Commissioner of Police
with 2 Sub Inspectors of Police, 6 Head Constables and 4 Police Constables. District Crime
Record Bureau is functioning in a separate building.
The Single Digit Finger Print Bureau, Calicut City was sanctioned as per
GO (Rt) No. 2534/76/Home dt. 04-11-1976 and started functioning on 12-01-1977.
The Police Photographic unit for Kozhikode District started from 15-01-1968.
A Police dog squad is available for Kozhikode City under 4 Police Constables.
There are 4 dogs and they are accommodated in the kennel. These dogs are named
Dog No.170 Robin, Dog No.178 Vicky, Dog No. 180 Gracy and Dog No. 202 Buzo.
Robin and Gracy are sniffer dogs, regularly utilized for Anti-sabotage operation.
Dogs Vicky and Buzo are tracker dogs, used for the detection of narcotic offences
and regularly being utilized for the investigation of sensational cases.
A Bomb Detecting and Defusing Squad also attached to DCRB consisting one Assistant
Sub Inspector and 3 Police Constables are also work this office with equipments.
Armed Reserve, Kozhikode city is functioning at Maloorkunnu from 1977, about 1 KM
away from Chevayur Police Station, whichis on Calicut - Wayanad Road. The area of
the Camp is 24.02 Acres in two villages (Viz.) Vengeri, Chevayur.
Four companies (A, B, C, and D Coys) and one Head quarter company are functioning
at Armed Reserve Camp. For administrative convenience the entire strength of this
camp is grouped into two wings. Of these companies D & HQ form I wing under the
control of Reserve Inspector - I and this wing is supervised by Assistant
Commandant I wing. The other companies A, B, C forms II wing under the control of
Reserve Inspector-II and this wing is supervised by Assistant Commandant II wing.
Deputy Commandant of AR is having overall supervision of camp.
This unit was formed in August 1993, while Sri.N.Shanker Reddy, IPS was the Commissioner of Police
Kozhikode city. It carries a garment making unit. For the smooth functioning of this unit a
committee is formed in which the Commissioner of Police, Kozhikode City is the President,
Dy Commandant is Vice president, Assistant Commandant is the Secretary and one Sub Inspector
as Officer in charge. This Unit has small scale industries registration and sale tax
registration certificate. A sub unit (City Pol) is functioning in its own building at Pavamani Road,
near City Police Office. The main objective of Kshemanikethan garments unit is the welfare of
family members.
A police library and Recreation Club is also functioning in AR Camp, Kozhikode City. Kerala State
Library Council is giving grants to the Library. Approximately 4000 books are available in the
library. Annual Day of the Club is celebrated in every year.
For the welfare of force a Police Dry Canteen is functioning in the camp from April
1992 under a committee in which the Commissioner of Police is the President,
Assistant Commissioner of Police is the Secretary and the Reserve Inspector- I is the
officer in charge of the canteen. The Telephone 2372860 is available in the Canteen.
The police personnel can purchase stationeries and glossaries at a very profitable rate
from the Armed Reserve dry canteen. A branch of the Dry canteen is functioning near City Police
Office from where public can also purchase articles at a cheap rate.
A separate Narcotic Cell was formed as per GO(MS)351/95Home dated 07-11-95 which is functioning
with one Assistant Commissioner of Police and one Head Constable, to handle the cases of
Narcotic possession, use and trafficking of narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances.
The Cell is at present functioning in the new building near the Chevayur Police Station. Any
information about the drug trafficking can be directly passed on to the District Chief of Police or
to the telephone No. 1090.
The Crime Detachment, Kozhikode City is functioning from 26-02-1996 vide GO (RT) 457/96/ Home
date 20-02-96 headed by one Assistant Commissioner of Police. Crime Detachment is supervising
the function of Vanitha Cell, Cyber Crime Enquiry Cell and handling important Cases by the order
of District Police Chief.
In the Seminar on Juvenile delinquency held at New Delhi on 25th November 1965 it was
recommended that Juvenile Wings might be started in the Police Department to deal
with the problem of Juvenile delinquency. Governments agree that Police can play a
positive role in preventing Juvenile delinquency. As a first step, one Juvenile Wing was
started at Kozhikode with the staff of 1 Sub Inspector, 1 Head Constable and 4 Police Constables.
This Juvenile Wing Unit started functioning at Calicut City during 1969 as per GO (MS)262/69.
The Unit is under the Commissioner of Police and supervised by the Assistant Commissioner
of Police, Administration, Kozhikode City.
The main duties of the Juvenile Wing as mentioned in the chief Office endorsement are to patrol high
delinquency areas slums, brothels, Bus Stands, Railways Stations, Cinemas, Hotels, Shopping areas,
Tourist Centers and other such Public places where crowds are expected and to care the destitute or
run away children who require protection from the anti-social influence of those places and to deal
with them as the case may be, by restoring them to the parents or legal guardians or where they are
destitute suitable arrangement are to be made available for receiving such children.
