On the formation of Kerala State on 01-11-1956, Kozhikode City was formed as a part of the
Erstwhile Malabar District of Madras State.
Consequent to the formation of the state, Malabar District was bifurcated in to three
Districts viz Kozhikode, Palakad and Kannur. In 1969 certain parts of Kozhikode District
was bifurcated to the newly created Malappuram District. In 1979 Kozhikode was bifurcated
into two Police District namely Kozhikode City and Kozhikode Rural. The City Police Office
started functioning with effect from 01-06-1979 in the existing building.
Kozhikode City Police Unit divided into 2 sub division for law and order administration
namely South and North Sub Divisions. These sub divisions are then divided into 6 Circles
and then 16 Police Stations. For the effective enforcement of traffic in Kozhikode City a
separate traffic unit is functioning. In addition to this, Special Branch, DCRB, Juvenile
Wing, Crime Detachment, Narcotic Cell, Control Room and Armed Reserve are also functioning.
The Kozhikode City spread over 440.07 Square KMs is having adense population. This is the
3rd largest Corporation in Kerala State. The jurisdiction of the Kozhikode City comprised
of entire area of Calicut Corporation, Feroke, Ramanattukara, Kadalundy, Beypore,
Cheruvannur - Nallalam, Olavanna, Elathur, Thalakkulathur, Kakkodi, Kuruvattoor, Madavoor,
Mavoor, Perumanna and Peruvayal Panchayaths. Hindus, Muslims and Christians forms major
part of the population. A few families of Jains, Pharsis, Jews etc., are also settled here.
Gujarathies, Marvadies, Bangolies etc., who came here for business purpose, have also
settled here. The people, in general are peace-loving.
Kozhikode City is a part of Kozhikode Parliamentary Constituency. Kozhikode - I, Kozhikode - II,
Beypore Assembly constituencies, major portion of Kunnamangalam Assembly Constituency and part
of Balussery Constituency falls within the Kozhikode City Police District.
Kozhikode City police falls under Kannur Range which comes under North Zone.
