This Vanitha Police Station is the first Women Police station in India as per the GO (RT) 335/74 Home (E) dtd.
01-03-74 with the area of 13.5 cent. It was inaugurated by The Prime Minister Smt. Indira Gandhi on 23-10-1973.
Smt. M. Padmini Amma is the first Sub Inspector of this Police Station. At the time of establishment women
Police station has jurisdiction over seven Police station only,ie Town, Kasaba, Chemmangad, Nadakkavu,
Panniyankara, Medical College and Meenchanda. Later the jurisdiction is extended to the whole Calicut City Police
District.

The women's division of Kozhikode City Police is divided into two wings viz Vanitha (Women) Police Station and Women
Cell. Women cell is under the charge of Circle Inspector.
The Cell is functioning under the supervision of Assistant Commissioner of Police, Crime Detachment. The Cell is not
entrusted with investigation of any case. The Cell is also expected to monitor the progress of the investigation of
all cases in which women are victims. This is in addition to the statistical data to be collected with regard to the
women atrocities. It is also necessary that the women Cell should assist the District Police Chief in reviewing the progress
of investigation of cases in which women are victims (rape, dowry deaths, murder of women and cases under 498(A).
The Women Cell, Kozhikode started functioning from 30-09-1995vide Go (RT) No. 25-08-1995 in a separate room in the
Vanitha Police Station from 30-09-1995. The Cell now functioning in a separate building infront of the City Traffic
Station from November 1998 onwards.
